Our surgeons perform intraocular surgeries (Cataract & Retinal Surgeries) at the Mercy Hospital in Dunedin, and Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital in Queenstown.
Minor procedures such as lid surgeries will be performed in the minor operating room at the Queenstown Medical Centre.
The cost of cataract surgery depends on the types of intraocular lenses, anaesthetic (Local vs General), consummables (iris hooks, CTR), and the type of intraocular lenses.
Types of intraocular lenses
Monofocal lenses : These are the most economical option, providing excellent quality sight at one specific distance. For the majority of people, distance sight is the preferred refractive aim. However, the quality of sight rapidly declines outside of the range of focus. That usually means bifocal or progressive glasses are required for intermediate (66cm - 100cm), and near (33cm - 65cm) tasks.
Extended Depth of Field / EDOF / Bifocal lenses : These lenses are designed to provide a greater range of sight. With the EDOF lenses implanted, the majority of patients are able to function without prescription glasses (spectacles) for distance and intermediate tasks. However, for smaller prints and near work (33cm - 65cm), reading glasses will still be needed.
Trifocal lenses : These are the most expensive intraocular lenses. They are designed to provide the full range of vision : Distance, intermediate, and near. However, not everyone is a candidate of these lenses. A few disadvantages of these lenses include unwanted glare & halos at night, the loss of contrast at low light settings, and a higher dysphotopsia profile.
A vision simulator of how these different types of intracular lenses may alter your vision is also available from the Alcon Visual Simulator.
Pterygium is a form of sun-related growth of flesh over the clear cornea. This happens over time and can cause poor vision, irritation, inflammation, and poor cosmesis. The disorder is generally considered benign but approximately 2-5% can be associated with pre-cancerious or cancerous growth.
Treatment : Mild pterygium can be managed with lubricating drops, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and occasionally topical anti-inflammatory drops such as steroids.
Surgery: Surgery option should be considered when the pterygium is causing significant astigmatism, poor vision, inflammation, or showing signs of suspicious malignancy (cancerous) changes.
